“When theologians declare that they accept the evolution philosophy because, however the world came to be, God was behind it, this is a fatal concession for religion or theology. When religion withdraws into this position, it has abandoned the whole field of human interest. It may be safe from attack, but it is also powerless and a matter of indifference.”
William Graham Sumner, The Forgotten Man’s Almanac, (New Haven: Yale University Press), September 15th.
One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich is a life changer. So is The Gulag Archipelago. So is Cancer Ward. And he was so right at the Harvard speech. One eulogist, at Human Events (normally a pretty good spot) called him a colossal ingrate primarily because he distinguished lovers of freedom from abusers of freedom. So far from the truth, they become illustrations of what he was trying to convey. A great man gone. A solid eulogy at National Review (although Buckley would have done better had he not gone first).
